Fateful meeting: Lennon signs a copy of his Double Fantasy album for Mark David Chapman, who would be waiting for the star six hours later in the same spot – outside New York’s Dakota apartments building
Rolling Stone has the last print interview of John that was conducted 3 days before his death but never fully released until now.
“What they want is dead heroes, like Sid Vicious and James Dean,” he said. “I’m not interested in being a dead fucking hero … so forget ’em, forget ’em.”
He also spoke about the possibility of returning to touring.
“We just might do it,” Lennon said.
“But there will be no smoke bombs, no lipstick, no flashing lights. It just has to be comfy. But we could have a laugh. We’re born-again rockers, and we’re starting over … There’s plenty of time, right? Plenty of time.”
John was dead wrong. There was no time left.
Making a comeback after a five year hiatus made him a threat to the status quo of continued militarism and war. As the most outspoken Beatle and ever the critic of the war machine, the possibility of his mobilizing for peace was too much for the upcoming Reagan, Bush Sr. etc. regimes. He had to be eliminated.

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV,
And you think you’re so clever and classless and free,
But you’re still fucking peasants as far as I can see,
A working class hero is something to be.
