There’s so much talk about guns and who controls them. States are proposing laws to keep the feds out of the business of gun confiscation and threatening to arrest them if they try. Sheriffs are saying they will not assist any federal effort to neuter the 2nd Amendment. States rights and how they are applied have long been a contentious issue in this country and in several ways remain so.
The gay rights movement has had some success in using the concept of states rights for their right to marry objective. There is no threat that I know of for the feds coming into states to arrest gay married couples legal under their state’s laws.
The same cannot be said for states that have legalized medial marijuana. The feds continue to shut down state legal grow operations and dispensaries, arresting some and threatening others with prison time as seen in the video below.
There have been a few perceived victories by marijuana advocates such as LA repeals its ban on pot stores but that does nothing about fed raids and possibly could incite them to do more.
There are 18 states where medical marijuana is legal and 2 where recreational use is somewhat legal.. Can we afford to have the federal government interfere in all of these? It’s time to legalize it in every state and tell the feds to butt out.
Putting the feds in their constitutional place is the goal of legitimate gun rights activists as it is with marijuana and hemp proponents and those wanting to dismantle the ‘war on drugs.’ It seems to me they all should be natural allies to preserve individual and states rights. In states like Tennessee this is not the case. The legislature is all about gun rights and standing up to the feds on this issue but want to keep marijuana users as criminals. Can you have it both ways? You can but it smacks of hypocrisy.
Maybe I’m off base in relating guns and marijuana but the way I see it…rights is rights. The pursuit of happiness and health ranks right up there with the 2nd Amendment. They actually go hand in hand.
