Avoiding GMOs

Posted on Updated on

Sometimes I need a reminder as to what we are dealing with regarding GMOs. As with so many other things in life, deception is often the rule.

The lists and information below are not all inclusive and may not reflect the latest details on what products contain GMOs and which do not.

Not spending our money to support the genetically engineered food industry is one small thing we can do to fight back against corporate power and corruption and to help preserve our health.. If enough folks watch where their dollars go, it could  become a major signal flashed all across the country that “enough is enough.”

As we all know, without a GMO labeling requirement and the fact that even the large ‘natural food’ stores like Whole Foods sell many products with GMO content, we are on our own.

What is GMO?

Agricultural Crops That Have a Risk of Being GMO

For consumers, it can be difficult to stay up-to-date on food ingredients that are at-risk of being genetically modified, as the list of at-risk agricultural ingredients is frequently changing.

Agricultural products are segmented into two groups: (1) those that are high-risk of being GMO because they are currently in commercial production, and (2) those that have a monitored risk because suspected or known incidents of contamination have occurred and/or the crops have genetically modified relatives in commercial production with which cross-pollination (and consequently contamination) is possible. For more information on the Non-GMO Project’s testing and verification of risk ingredients and processed foods, please see the Non-GMO Project Standard.

High-Risk Crops (in commercial production; ingredients derived from these must be tested every time prior to use in Non-GMO Project Verified products (as of December 2011):

  • Alfalfa (first planting 2011)
  • Canola (approx. 90% of U.S. crop)
  • Corn (approx. 88% of U.S. crop in 2011)
  • Cotton (approx. 90% of U.S. crop in 2011)
  • Papaya (most of Hawaiian crop; approximately 988 acres)
  • Soy (approx. 94% of U.S. crop in 2011)
  • Sugar Beets (approx. 95% of U.S. crop in 2010)
  • Zucchini and Yellow Summer Squash (approx. 25,000 acres)

ALSO high-risk: animal products (milk, meat, eggs, honey, etc.) because of contamination in feed.
Monitored Crops (those for which suspected or known incidents of contamination have occurred, and those crops which have genetically modified relatives in commercial production with which cross-pollination is possible; we test regularly to assess risk, and move to “High-Risk” category for ongoing testing if we see contamination):

  • Beta vulgaris (e.g., chard, table beets)
  • Brassica napa (e.g., rutabaga, Siberian kale)
  • Brassica rapa (e.g., bok choy, mizuna, Chinese cabbage, turnip, rapini, tatsoi)
  • Curcubita (acorn squash, delicata squash, patty pan)
  • Flax
  • Rice

Common Ingredients Derived from GMO Risk Crops
Amino Acids, Aspartame, Ascorbic Acid, Sodium Ascorbate, Vitamin C, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Ethanol, Flavorings (“natural” and “artificial”), High-Fructose Corn Syrup, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, Lactic Acid, Maltodextrins, Molasses, Monosodium Glutamate, Sucrose, Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP), Xanthan Gum, Vitamins, Yeast Products.
You may also be wondering about…

  • Tomatoes: In 1994, genetically modified Flavr Savr tomatoes became the first commercially produced GMOs. They were brought out of production just a few years later, in 1997, due to problems with flavor and ability to hold up in shipping. There are no genetically engineered tomatoes in commercial production, and tomatoes are considered “low-risk” by the Non-GMO Project Standard.
  • Potatoes: Genetically modified NewLeaf potatoes were introduced by Monsanto in 1996. Due to consumer rejection  several fast-food chains and chip makers, the product was never successful and was discontinued in the spring of 2001. There are no genetically engineered potatoes in commercial production, and potatoes are considered “low-risk” by the Non-GMO Project Standard.
  • Wheat: There is not currently, nor has there ever been, any genetically engineered wheat on the market. Of all “low-risk” crops, this is the one most commonly (and incorrectly) assumed to be GMO. It is a key commodity crop, and the biotech industry is pushing hard to bring GMO varieties to market. The Non-GMO Project closely watches all development on this front.
  • Salmon: A company called AquaBounty is currently petitioning the FDA to approve its genetically engineered variety of salmon, which has met with fierce consumer resistance. Find out more here.
  • Pigs: A genetically engineered variety of pig, called Enviropig was developed by scientists at the University of Guelph, with research starting in 1995 and government approval sought beginning in 2009. In 2012 the University announced an end to the Enviropig program, and the pigs themselves were euthanized in June 2012.

It’s enough to make the babies cry

Posted on Updated on

What are the odds that of the 5 types of meningitis there would be outbreaks of 3 of them in one fairly small area within the same general time frame?

13 cases with 2 deaths from rare fungal meningitis have been reported in Nashville in patients getting  lumbar epidural steroid injections at the Saint Thomas Outpatient Neurosurgery Center to relieve pain. The center has been shut down and 3 lots of the injections have been recalled by the manufacturer. Reports are coming in that there could be hundreds more in danger as these injections and maybe the same lots have been used in other locations. Can we say contamination? Yes we can. The CDC is on the scene which means they will get to bottom of this or protect the drug manufacturers. It’s hard to say which. Lawyers must be lining up…smelling blood in the water.    Update 10-3-12…..Update 10-4-12

In Franklin, Tennessee four families of students who attend Oak View Elementary School reported to the Williamson County school system that their children contracted viral meningitis last month. School leaders said since doctors are not required to report viral meningitis to the health department, the school system does not have a confirmed number of cases. Extra cleaning crews were brought to the school over the weekend to help prevent it from spreading.   Buses that service the school have also been cleaned.

The more common bacterial meningitis killed two local students last month, an 18 year old student at Middle Tennessee State University and a 9 year old elementary school boy in Mt. Juliet. These deaths provided an opportunity to promote the meningitis vaccine.

Cases of meningitis come up every year but I seem to remember a time in the past when this disease was so rare that hardly anyone even knew what it was. It begs the question why so many now and especially how could a steroid drug become a carrier of the fungal type?

The CDC is right on top of the peanut and nut butter recalls though. They say New Mexico-based Sunland the culprit. This company makes what can be considered higher quality products than the giant corporate suppliers do and I’m pretty sure I ate a few jars of the suspect peanut butter. It was odd that on a national news show I heard them say that “choosy mothers who chose Jif or Skippy are safe.” Maybe not so odd after all as major corporations try to stick together. No mention that most of the Jif’s and Skippy’s contain GMO high fructose corn syrup.

The alleged salmonella illnesses are reported to have been in 19 states but I can’t find a list of those states or even one interview with a victim. Does it seem like more of the recalls here lately have been for quality ‘good for you’ food than for junk and fast food scrap? Organic seems to get implicated too. It’s hard to know what to believe but to suspect an agenda is in progress seems about right to me.

One of the big questions is “Will Prop 37, the mandatory GMO labeling law, pass in California this Nov. 6?” Billions are at stake for Monsanto and their ilk. Millions are being spent to defeat the proposition. Media is being bought to try and convince voters to ‘just say no.’

Polls are showing support for 37 and that it will pass unless voters are convinced that prices will increase more than they are willing to pay. The TV screens and radio speakers are soon to be inundated with opposition ads over the next month and who knows how they will brainwash influence voters.

The wild card is the potential for electronic voting machine fraud. With so much money on the line it’s not out of the question. If the proposition passes expect lawsuits against it to quickly flow into the system. It could even go all the way to the Supreme Court and if the Supremes can rule positively for Citizens United don’t bet that they will side with the people on the simple issue of truth in labeling. I also won’t bet that this issue will come up in the presidential debates.

With the studies and questions of GMO’s causing cancer and other health issues as well as environmental damage you would think this would be a no-brainer for voters. Just plain common sense. The right to know. Monsanto is worried and is pulling out all the stops. To beat them on this would be significant.

For the sake of the rest of the country, we are pulling for Californians to drive a stake into the heart of corporate food criminals.

If not…well…it’s enough to make the babies cry.

Reoccurring Questions

Posted on

A common theme that keeps coming up among those of us who are lacking in money and health insurance is what we can do to maintain our health at the lowest cost. A balanced and as organic as possible diet, exercise, proper breathing techniques, some sunshine and a good attitude are my first choices. I like the frequent addition of raw garlic, onions and chili peppers as supplements and a few standby common inexpensive herbs for fairly minor health issues that may arise.

There are many potentially valuable nutritional supplements in the natural and health food stores and online but a look at the prices often means they’re out of the question.

So in a world of ever declining cash flow and a medical and pharmaceutical industry that will steal both your money and your health, is there anything really anything cheap that the po’ folks can add to their arsenal? Maybe something so inexpensive and effective that the ‘health care’ industry feels that their income and control could be jeopardized? Nutrients that the FDA will demonize to protect their turf? Actually there are many.

A good friend, ex-nurse and therapist who has sold many expensive supplements over the years but in a failing economy found no one buying embarked on research to find something so cheap, readily available and yet effective with a long history of alleged success that it should be in every home. He thinks he found it … food grade hydrogen peroxide. After a year of taking it and even giving it to his dog, he thinks it’s the real deal.

This is not a promotion. It’s more about asking questions. He’s bringing me some the next time he comes down from his mountain so I’ll give it a try myself. If you’re interested there’s more info here and an 85 page pdf  The Truth About Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide which gives a lot of background and details on its use which are many besides human consumption. If anyone has any experience with this nutrient or has any more relevant information, please let me know.

My friend has been selling food grade hydrogen peroxide for several months by word of mouth and through ads in some free newspapers but not much volume at all and with a slim profit margin because it’s so cheap. He has been bugging me to set him up a website for sales. He doesn’t have a computer and actually lives off the grid.  I’ve been very hesitant. The FDA is strong arming those who make claims as to anything with health benefits unless it’s from big pharma so having my IP address connected to a web site with claims could be iffy.

I had him read Mike Adams  FDA unleashes end game scheme to outlaw virtually all dietary supplements formulated after 1994 to get a glimpse of what may be coming up and although hydrogen peroxide has been around for a long time and may not apply, there’s still that issue of making claims. I could set up a sales site without any claims at all or providing links but whether it would work would remain to be seen.

Anyway, I find the potential of food grade hydrogen peroxide to be interesting and with careful handling and dosage may be something to think about. It won’t break the bank to try. I’ll follow up later if I think it’s beneficial.

I just heard a bit on cable news that if the debt ceiling is not raised the government is thinking about selling assets.  We all knew this was coming. The international banking cabal wants it all and at fire sale prices.

I have some issues with Ron Paul but he did say the other day that in order to free up some money all we had to do is quit paying interest payments to the Federal Reserve. Maybe we should do that instead of selling gold reserves, if we have any, or anything else of value that ‘we the people’ actually own. The Fed wouldn’t like that and may get desperate and have its boys blow something up to prove a point but instead of threatening to cut off social security I’ll go with the idea of cutting off the Fed.

A comment from an anonymous poster on the last thread is worth repeating …..

The five fundamental steps to monetary independence:

(1) Outlaw usury.

(2) Outlaw currency speculation.

(3) Outlaw private ownership of banks.

(4) Declare all of the odious debt incurred under the old system to be null and void.

(5) Exercise caution when dealing with foreign countries that are still under the control of the Rothschild gang and implement appropriate countermeasures when necessary to thwart any attempted economic sabotage.

Since ‘we the people’ have no allies on these points in government at this time, I don’t know how we would accomplish this but at least we can plant the seed of thought.

Same old story. A kid goes to jail for protesting the criminal ‘elite.’ Bankers and their minions go on vacation.

We’re All Castaways Now

Posted on Updated on

A friend keeps making the joke that “It’s going to be a great gardening year. Just like the Gilligan’s Island episode Pass the Vegatables Please.”

Here’s the plot …

Gilligan finds a crate of radioactive vegetable seeds. The plants grow quickly and grossly misshapen, but the Castaways are so hungry for new items in their diet that they consume them quickly. The plants, when eaten, give the castaways super-human powers. Of course, after he realizes that the vegetables are radioactive, the Professor saves the day by having the castaways eat the soap they had been making to absorb the radioactivity.

‘Art’ predicts life so we’ll go with the Professor’s advice and try and eat our way out of this current radioactive mess we’re in.

aangirfan has a post Foods to Protect Against Radiation and it reminded me of what we think we need to eat  that may be to our advantage in fighting off the invisible devils that plague us.

How to Protect Yourself from Radiation is another overview and there are many other folks who have sound advice.

People are talking about all kinds of exotic remedies that may be of great value. Herbs and supplements I’m sure are useful but there’s a problem for those of us of limited means.  We won’t be able to get any of these ‘medicines’ and pay the light bill at the same time. That leaves us pretty much with a diet only resistance and on the budget we can swing.

Growing our own, organic, raw, local, non-processed, non-GMO are some of the keywords. You know what to do. I don’t have to repeat it. Suggestions for a poor man’s fight against poisons are always appreciated.

But when the seeds become radioactive … we’ll know we’re in trouble. Gilligan warned us.

This unknown artist’s rendition seems symbolic of our times.

“We’re being swamped.”

Too Fat to Fight

Posted on

The military once again uses their assets in the media to issue another national security warning.

No, this time it’s not al-Qaeda or homegrown extremists. It’s fat kids. And kids that are dumb and criminal.

At least 9 million Americans between the ages of 17 and 24 are too fat and unfit to serve in the military, says “Too Fat to Fight,” a report being released today by Mission: Readiness, a group of retired military leaders.

The new report follows findings from the senior military leaders group that 75 percent of adults in that age range are unqualified to serve in the armed forces because they lack the physical conditioning, don’t have high school diplomas, or have criminal records.

On Monday, one of the organization’s members, retired Maj. Gen. Wesley E. Craig, said early childhood education {war propaganda} was important to national security.

Speaking before several hundred educators and business leaders at a forum on early education in Harrisburg, Craig said, “Our national security in 2030 is heavily dependent on the boys and girls in preschool and kindergarten right now.”

“I’m here to say that if we don’t take action soon, it’s going to get harder to recruit qualified people to serve,” said Craig, a former commander of the 28th Infantry Division of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

Being overweight or obese is the leading medical reason applicants fail to qualify for military service, “Too Fat to Fight” states.

“Every month, hundreds of otherwise excellent candidates for military service are turned away by recruiters because of weight problems,” retired Army Gen. John M. Shalikashvili, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in the report.

Since 1995, the proportion of recruits who failed their physical exams because they were overweight has risen by nearly 70 percent, the report says. {more}

Wars without end require planning and the kindergartner of today is the killer of tomorrow. How can a fat fighter chase the terrorists up and down the mountains of Afghanistan? Occupations of foreign lands is no place for the obese.

Now we all cringe every time we see a 200 lb. 12 year old chase down his Big Mac with a Mountain Dew. It’s a sure sign that the corporate jingles have been successful. The health care costs of childhood obesity are bad enough and how do parents afford new upsized clothes every few months?

But I’m thinking that the military is overreacting. New technology can overcome the lack of slim bodies to kill civilians and women and children.

That’s what drones are for …..

Conspiracy of the Week – Joseph Moshe and the Ukraine ‘Plague’

Everyone likes a good conspiracy tale.

The edwardlong808 videos of Moshe’s arrest in LA…..

Moshe called into the Dr True Ott Show on Republic Broadcasting and said he was a microbiologist who wanted to hand over evidence to a States Attorney regarding tainted H1N1 vaccines being produced by Baxter pharmaceutical. He claimed that that Baxters lab in the Ukraine was in fact preparing a bioweapon disguised as a vaccine. He maintained that the vaccine contained both adjuvants designed to weaken the immune system, and replicated RNA from the virus responsible for the 1918 global pandemic. Thats it. He made no threat against Obama, nor said anything about bombs or any attack.

Dr. Bill Deagle disclosed a story that occurred August 11-13 in Los Angeles involving Joseph Moshe, a bio-scientist with a dual USA/Israel citizenship.

Fox News shill says vaccine caused neurological disorders may be "Psychogenic"

Take your shot, take your chances.

Complications may not get much sympathy or help from the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies set to make a ton of money.

Any problems you have from vaccines are most likely ‘psychosomatic.’

So say some ‘doctors.’
